“Green” Oakland High Students

Many people have been talking about global warming lately. Here is the question, when did people start getting concerned about our environment? Well, that I do not know, but what I do know is that Oakland High School students have been caring about the environment for the past 10 years already.

At Oakland High School, we have an Environmental Science Academy (ESA), which is run by Katherine Noonan and Kevin Jordan (both science teachers at Oakland High). ESA allows students to learn more about the environment by going to community services, field trips, guest speaker presentations. Because of ESA, students are able to go to cool places like Catalina Island, Kings Canyon, Lassen Volcanic National Park, as well as many other geologically exciting locations.

In ESA, students don’t just go to field trips and have fun. Students also learn about environmental issues and do things that are beneficial to the environment. ESA students do community services like coastal cleanup, invasive species removal, and planting. ESA students are also responsible for the school’s recycling system.

ESA students really did a lot for our environment locally and globally for the past 10 years. Of course ESA can’t solve the global warming problem on it’s own, but it is a way to get people interested and involved in keeping our world clean. We should all thank ESA students for their effort and time!
