The PVC Controversy
My favorite leggings may soon be illegal. California is considering banning PVC, the material polyvinyl chloride, because its resistance to degrade when no longer in use and because of its potential toxicity.
PVC is produced with chlorine gas which is a carcinogen and after production, may leak chemicals upon contact. It is a cheap plastic-like material found in upholstery, flooring, hoses and tubing, cables, and inflatable structures. However, PCV is also present in clothing. It is used most commonly in the manufacturing of shoes, coats, jackets, aprons, and bags. You may have things in your closet with PVC and not even know it. Why PVC may be favorable is that it’s waterproof so manufacturers use it in rain coats and boots. I like to wear my PVC leggings when it rains because the water slips right off, it’s shiny, and keeps me really warm. It’s a pretty material too. PVC has an appearance similar to rubber, latex, or leather but is cheaper than any of them. Before I knew how toxic PVC is, I personally favored PVC over leather especially because people nowadays are so dependent on animal products.
I don’t know how I feel about California banning PVC because it is one of my favorite materials for clothing. However, the ban would stop toxic chemicals in pet toys containing PVC so many animals can avoid being sent to an early grave. PVC is in a lot of my clothing so if the ban does happen, then there will have to be an alternative for industries beyond fashion.
